Earth Natural Foods, 200 Kentish Town Road, London, NW5 2AE

Open 8.30am – 7pm, Monday to Saturday, closed Sundays
Welcome to the very first in a series that I plan will take me all over London, finding places to shop zero and low waste, local, organic, environmentally friendly and also friendly in general. I’m starting on home turf in north London, but I plan to bravely venture into the centre, east, west and even…south of the river! Exciting times 🙂

My first venue is also the one I visit the most, and have a huge soft spot for. Earth is an amazing place for loose staples – dried herbs and spices, teas, nuts, seeds, rice, beans, lentils, couscous and even eggs. They also have a huuuuuge cheese selection, served up in greaseproof paper (or popped in your own tub if you ask nicely, I’ve found). If you’ve never tried the Godminster Cheddar, you may well be missing out on the most delicious cheddar in existence.

Loose fruit and veg is also a great buy here, with more reasonable prices than many other organic places I’ve found. Depending on the season, you can find a weird and wonderful selection of squashes, fresh corn on the cob and one of the holy grails for the packaging-free shopper, seedless grapes!

One thing for the zero-waste shopper to note is that they haven’t really embraced the concept of taring yet (where the weight of the packaging is deducted from the total weight of the product). So for those of you bringing your own packaging, bring cloth bags, produce bags, and your lightest tubs and containers for refills.

This isn’t to say that there isn’t plenty of packaged stuff here – oils, vinegars, chutneys, pesto etc. Really, pretty much everything you’d want from a health food shop is hiding on a shelf somewhere. Lots of glass options too for those avoiding single-use plastic (why would I do that, you ask? A few reasons here.)

It’s not all edibles here either, you can also smell lovely without the packaging here too. Refills are available for washing up liquid, fabric washing liquid and softener and multi-purpose cleaner. Faith in Nature shampoo and conditioners can also be refilled in their own bottles, and there’s a good range of loose soaps.

Lastly, but rather importantly, Earth is the only place I’ve found so far that sells toilet paper in compostable packaging! And who wouldn’t want that?

Shelves of herbs and spices greet you at the entrance
